I recently read an article related to the Trayvon Martin Shooting, but it was in the perspective of an Arab American woman and it really opened my eye on the issue of racism.
We all are at list a little familiar with the Trayvon Martin case, but what Linda Sarsour (author of the article) points out is that recently a Muslim woman was found brutally beaten in her California home with a note left behind almost as a warning to all Muslim or Arabic Americans to go back to their original countries. This murder has gotten little attention because of the Trayvon Martin shooting, but that is not the point I am trying to make.
Sarsour goes on to say in the article that there is a double standard towards racism against African Americans and Arab Americans. Sarsour feels that since 9/11 it is more socially acceptable to denounce Arabs because of how they look or dress; yet the “n-word” is completely socially unacceptable.
I do not consider myself a racist person at all, but this article did open my eyes and realize that I do see racism of this kind almost everyday and I do not think twice about what is coming out of someone’s mouth regarding this race, but I do notice when someone says something derogative towards the African American race. If anything I would just encourage everyone to at least read this article, because I do feel like it really opened my eyes. I also think that this could easily relate to a pop culture issue, because of what the media decides to consider news, think about “Baghdad Burning” also.
