Recently Mattel has come out with its fifth version of President Barbie. According to CNN, the Barbie for President Campaign has been around since 1992 and continues with valiant effort to gain a seat in the oval office. With this Barbie coming out for the past few election years, is Mattel trying to give girls in America a “girl power” message, or are they traveling down a more vain route?
Yes, Barbie running for president is giving a message that girls can do whatever the boys can do just as well. Mattel gets credit for that. But in the video the men sitting on the news panel poke fun at the situation of Barbie for President (I’m aware she is just a doll) and the female reporter is more concerned about the dolls outfit and her new ability to stand on her own, thanks to her cute new pink wedges. The CNN video clip also talks about Mattel’s press release, discussing Barbie’s “Glampaign.”
With this being said, it is known that if Barbie were a real person, she would not be able to stand on her own or walk properly due to her disproportioned body. With the woman reporter going on about the length of Barbie’s skirt and how fashion forward her outfit is, I think Barbie is taking on a similar role as Disney Princesses and the message they portray. Barbie is blonde, she is pretty, she has the perfect body, and she can be president. I believe that this product is not saying, “Girls, you can have big ambitions too,” but “Girls, with great looks, you can achieve your goals.”
