So having never used Twitter, I suppose I don’t understand
the obsession with things like who to follow, who follows me, etc. But, I was
surprised to see that one of the “news stories” on msn.com was that Betty White
got a Twitter account. Really MSN? Betty White signing up for her 140 character
per tweet account is national news? Why are we so obsessed with what is going
on in the lives of others? I can understand it to an extent with things like
Facebook because we know the people posting all the status updates, or at least
have some loose affiliation with them. But, where did the obsession with celebrities
come in? I feel like it started out with gossip magazines and blogs about where
celebrities were spending their time, what movie they were making next, or what
they do with their kids on the weekends. However, with Twitter now, I see my
friends becoming increasingly obsessed with what their favorite celebrity ate
for breakfast, what commercial they found funny, or the fact that they just got
a paper cut and now need to decide which color of Band-Aid to put on. Why do we
care about these things? Why are we treating celebrities like gods? If somebody
cares or wants to put input into what type of bandage I put on my paper cut, I
feel bad for them. Why should it be any different for celebrities? Our lives
should not be this boring. Anyway, congratulations Betty White. You just got
millions of people to follow the daily life of a 90 year-old woman.
