Gender Roles
Last week I was reading a sports magazine about the Baylor's basketball player Brittney Griner. Some of it was about how of a great basketball player she was but the rest was about if she was a man or not. Some believe that she has no female tendencies and that she is really a man playing with a bunch of girls. The magazine explains why people think she's a man. It says that the average girl size is no taller than 6.7 and stop growing after they reach 17. The world has not seen to many girls grow after this age or even be able to do most of the things she does on the basketball court. In one of Baylor's game this year Brittney Griner scored 40 points and slam dunked in the same game. Most people feel that is unrealistic of a female to accomplish. After the game most questioned if her family never game her a gender growing up and one day she just up and decided she was going to be a girl so she could go to the WNBA. In today's society women are known for looking pretty or doing some work invovled with children, so to see someone good as her in backetball questions the idea if she's really a woman. Some men who play professional basketball can't do half the things on the court that she can which makes the argument even more debatable. Even on campus they say Brittney is never seen dressed up outside of wearing basketball sweats and shorts. Instead of this article talking about all of the positive things she's done it bashes her for not being accepted into today's society.
