New to Twitter

I didn't have an account on the world renowned Twitter website until I was lucky enough to participate in this class. I wasn't as familiar with all of the norms and "regulations" associated with Twitter as everyone else who used the website. I was oblivious to what the "#" symbol was used for as well what a "mention" was. I thought typing and sharing what i was doing with other people would be quite simple. Oh how wrong I was. I later found out, using context clues, what a "hashtag" was and when it was appropriate to use one. I also learned how to mention someone who was involved with my activity and who also used a Twitter account. I was on my way to becoming a significant part of the Twitter community!
Even though twitter was, and still is, fairly new to me, I have been apart of facebook for quite some time now. I was familiar with basically everything someone needed to know about facebook. I updated my status once a day, MAYBE, but I understood the basic concept. Right around Christmas last year, I started noticing people putting the symbol "#" in front of a word or two words with no spacing. I didn't think much of it because honestly, I didn't care. Noticing the actual hashtags wasn't the big deal, the main thing I noticed was the comment people were writing about them. I read things like "don't use that on here," or "hashtags are NOT for facebook." I was so confused at first, but I didn't think it should be such a big deal what people used it for. I thought people should just mind their own business and go about their day.

The main point of this blog entry is to explain my changing point of view of this newer form of social media. I thought Twitter was pointless. Everything you could do with Twitter, you could do with facebook and then some. After being apart of twitter for couple of months now, I am starting to get it. Whenever i see hashtags on facebook, it sort of grinds my gears a bit now. I think to myself, "that's not for facebook dummy." I also am liking the simplicity of Twitter and how easy it is to use. I find myself becoming more and more of a social media junkie, but then again, what 20 year-old isn't now-a-days?
