Well, Ozzie Guillen has done it again. The first-year
manager of the Miami Marlins is caught in the middle of a media firestorm for
comments he recently made in regards to former Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro. In
an age where most celebrities find themselves getting in trouble over comments
made through social media, Guillen managed to bring the general public into an
upheaval from what he said in an interview with Time Magazine. When asked about Castro, Guillen stated, “I respect
Fidel Castro. You know why? Many people have tried to kill Fidel Castro in the
last 60 years, yet that [SOB] is still there.” (http://deadspin.com/5900102/ozzie-guillen-said-something-crazy-about-fidel-castro).
Being the new manager of the MIAMI Marlins, this was about the most
controversial thing Guillen could have said. With such a large population of
Cuban-Americans living in southern Florida, people have naturally been
outraged.
What
surprised me was that he not only had time to think about his responses since
it was an interview for a magazine, as opposed to blurting something out on
social media, but as far as I have seen he did not ask for the comments to be
taken out of the published part of the interview. Guillen also did not blame
the interviewer for taking his comments out of context. He simply made
controversial comments and is now having to deal with the consequences. Maybe,
just maybe, people in the spotlight will someday realize how nothing they say
or do is going to slip by without being heavily scrutinized and evaluated.
