Princess Culture

Two days ago I went to the Dollar Store with one of my roommates.  As we were walking up and down the aisles of the store, she found a package of Disney princess kleenexes and HAD to buy them.  She was just so excited when she saw that Belle was on the packaging, because SHE IS Belle.  She talks about it all the time.  What is it about Disney princesses that make 21 year old girls revert back to a 6 year old state?  I've watched my roommate buy several Disney items within the past few years of living with her.  I've also sat through many Disney princess marathons, and I've heard roommates comment on how they wish they could be a Disney princess.

My main concern with all of this is how it makes them react to the rest of the world around them.  When my roommates and their boyfriends fight, their main reason for being upset is that he wasn't living up to their expectations.  He hasn't been the knight in shining armor that they expected.  I think all of this makes me nervous for all these little girls growing up.  Maybe some girls naturally want to dress up as a princess, but I think it could and will be dangerous for media to bombard them with the "necessity" of being a princess.  What kind of standards are being set?  I think it runs the risk of teaching girls that all they have to do is wait for a guy to come along and he'll fix everything.  That's not going to solve all of their problems, if anything, it could cause more problems for them.
