How Bad is Bad?
We all eat out, even if it is not all the time, somehow food has been paired with socializing in society . I can't tell you how many times my friends want to catch up over going out to lunch, dinner, dessert, you name it. While I have always been conscious about my food choices, after watching Food Inc. and working on our project, The Food Paradox, in class, I have become even more skeptical on the foods these companies provide us. So, I decided to download a new app that I had heard about called Restaurant Nutrition. This app has almost any restaurant or fast food place you can imagine and has a list of all their menu items with the amount of calories, fat, etc each thing has. Needless to say the "healthy" choices I thought I was making turned out to not be so healthy after all. For example, any salad eaters out there? Well then do not get the Quesadilla Explosion Salad at Chili's, with 1400 calories (almost your daily intake for the day) and 89g of fat (more fat than you are supposed to have in one day) this item that you would have previously thought that would be not so bad for you, ends up being terrible. Then I heard about another app called MyFitnessPal where you can track what you are consuming every day and it will give you a daily calorie goal, fat goal, etc, to meet your either weight loss or weight gain goals. You can even take a picture of the barcode of the food you are eating and it will register that and add it to your overall intake for the day. What is also great about this app is that it has a section for working out and the more working out that you do, the more calories it allots you. I think many people do not realize how much they take in per day and something like this is a simple way to keep track. I think we need to continue to make and advertise these apps so that people are really aware of what they are putting in their bodies.
