Let’s talk for a minute about product placement. It’s
EVERYWHERE. From a cultural aspect, what do you even really like? Do you wear
those fancy Beats by Dr. Dre headphones because they sound good and are worth
the money, or because you see them on TV and around campus? Is the desire to be
cool something that is intertwined with doing something popular? Because the
best way to popular is to be seen, and the best way to be seen on television is
money. Duh. The image above is from Morgan Spurlock’s new documentary, “The
Greatest Movie Ever Sold”, in which he creates from start to finish a
documentary showing how product placement is used in movies and TV shows and
how prevalent it is. And the best part? He paid for the entire movie through
product placement. The picture above is legitimate, all those people paid him
$X to have their products seen, because just having people see you, even if it’s
not an advertisement, is a way to be noticed and get people to value it based
on wanting to be “cool”. The amount of money spent on it is borderline
ridiculous as well. Have you been watching college basketball this past season?
Basketball is everywhere, no matter how rich or poor the location, there is
likely a basketball team. And you know what else there is? One of these:
In any arena you find on TV, no matter how trashy the rest
of the arena is, you’ll be sure to find a nice big screen along one side of the
court where announcers sit and advertisements lay. The most expensive portion
of many basketball arenas are these advertising screens, and that’s because
they pay for themselves with people like Adidas paying to have their name
displayed on there 12 times in a row.
