The Scary Truth
After watching Food Inc last week, my health nut tendencies have seemed to multiply. As a fitness instructor, I have always made it my responsibility to be maintaining a healthy lifestyle, whether it be working out or eating right. However, when you are surrounded by fast food and a college budget, eating right is not always the easiest thing to do. I think that the main thing that stood out to me on the discussion of cheap food was the argument that at least people are being fed. While this is a great argument itself, I want people to consider this: even though these people are being fed, is it food that will help them in the long run? After watching a movie like Food Inc, I am pretty sure it is clear that these cheaply produced foods are not what you should be consuming into your body. The way I look at it is this: When you have a car, you want to give it the best gas possible to make sure that your car is going to be there for you for the long run, you don't just put anything in your car to fuel it because you know overtime that will cause wear and tear on the car-its the same for your body. You have to give your body the right "fuel" to energize your body for not just the day but to maintain your body for future years. Food Inc shows all the awful substances that go into these processed foods. Also, after doing my project for this class over food and how it is produced and advertised, it just increases my belief that people need to begin to be more educated on what they are consuming. Sure, cheap food is food, but say you eat that cheap food and since you are not getting the proper nutrients your body needs you get sick easier. Then what happens? You have to go to the doctor and pay a ton of money for that. So, if you ask me I would rather pay a little more for healthier food and not risk getting sick constantly rather than eating unhealthy and treating my body poorly to end up in the doctors office on a regular basis and paying a ton for that. I think more movies like Food Inc need to be produced to show people the scary truth on what they are consuming so they can take a step back and determine for themselves if this is really the fuel they want to be given that is supposed to be keeping them alive.
