My HIMYM Addiction

At the beginning of the semester we talked about our popular culture addictions and I wasn’t able to think of anything for me that I would consider an addiction, until now; How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM). If you’ve never seen an episode of HIMYM here’s a video to summarize the first season for you…
…and there are 7 more amazing seasons after that (they are on season 7 now with season 8 in the works). Before I talk about how intensely I’m addicted to this show I want to lay the blame on the vehicle that feeds my addiction, Netflix.
If you have Netflix you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you don’t here is the company’s about us section:

“With more than 23 million streaming members globally, Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] is the world's leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows. For about US$7.99 a month, Netflix members in the Americas, United Kingdom and Ireland can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed over the Internet to PCs, Macs and TVs. Among the large and expanding base of devices streaming from Netflix are: Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PS3 consoles; an array of Blu-ray disc players, Internet-connected TVs, home theater systems, digital video recorders and Internet video players; Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod touch; Android and Windows tablets and phones; and Apple TV and Google TV. In all, more than 700 devices that stream from Netflix are available.”

No if you don’t have Netflix be warned: You might as well cancel any and all plans you have made for at least a week after you sign up.

Okay, on about my addiction – my addiction has led to many sleepless nights, procrastination of anything productive and of course a parasocial relationship with the main characters: Barney, Robin, Ted, Marshall and Lilly. I’ve always kind of laughed at the idea of having a parasocial relationship because I’ve never been into a movie/show so much to the point where part of me forgets reality but the other day I realized how much a simple show can make you a little crazy. The characters Ted and Robin were dating at one point and they had this little habit, it’s easier to show than tell so here you go…
…so the other day I was riding in the car with my friend and I feel bad for saying this but he was going on and on about (well I couldn’t tell you because I wasn’t listening because I was thinking about the last episode of HIMYM I watched) but I did here him say “general knowledge” and right after he said that I did Robin and Ted’s little thing and after I did it I then looked around the car (expecting to see the cast) and said out loud “haha, I’ve got to tell Robin and Ted I just did that.” and then realized how much the show had captivated me. After that I didn’t allow myself to get on Netflix for a week. Overall my point is be careful when signing up for Netflix and HIMYM is AMAZING!
