Kony 2012 and Activism

Have you seen this video about 'Kony 2012' yet?

If you haven't watched all 30 minutes of this video or any of it at all, I'm sure you've at least seen Facebook statuses and Twitter updates about it. If you have 30 minutes to spare go ahead and watch it, if not I'll sum it up for you.

A man named Joseph Kony, who lives in Uganda, Africa, is #1 on the International Criminals List for abducting children and turning them into war criminals that kill, mutulate and rape citizens. The effort is trying to make Kony famous so more and more people will know about him and all the terrible things he's done to children and people in Africa. The goal is to get him arrested this year so he can't hurt anymore people. What better way to spread the word than using Stone's way of activism?

The Invisible Children movement has enlisted a group of culture makers and policymakers that have a big influence over America to get people talking about it. Some of the culturemakers consist of people like Oprah, Lady Gaga and Bill Gates. Some of the policymakers are George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice and Bill Clinton. The goal is to have the culture makers and policymakers work together to stop Kony. You can check out the official website with a complete list of all the culture makers and policymakers here: Kony 2012.
We have talked a great deal about activism in class, which bring me to Stone and Gladwell's point of views. Stone thinks activism is spreading the word, it re-shapes authority and has an open exchange of info for check and balances. Gladwell thinks you need to put yourseld in danger or a high risk situaiton, you need to have a personal connection to the cause and it requires a lot of effort. In the video above, they clearly tell you how you can help by using a tactic Stone thinks is activism - spreading the word. They want to make Kony's name famous so everyone knows about him and put him the public eye.

The man who made this video used Gladwell's tactic. He actually went over to Africa so see what was going on and to start making an effort to end Kony's leadership role. Although not many people would be able to drop everything and jump on a plane to Africa, the Invisible Children Org. would like us to get involved by printing off a Kony 2012 sign and put it somewhere in public. Talking about it, posting it all over social media sites and getting people wondering what 'Kony 2012' is all about is another approach, which Stone views as activism.

(NOTE: I am not trying to sound like an advocate for this particular organization. I just think it's interesting.)
