It's true, I'll never look at dinner the same again. Food Inc. definitely put a damper on my plans for lunch this
afternoon and ruined my craving for Chick-Fil-A. I was going to swing by
to pick up a wrap after class, but I couldn’t stomach it after watching how the
chickens were raised and treated. I know that by tomorrow enough time will have
passed and the thought won’t bother me nearly as much and Chick-Fil-A will
start sounding delicious again. I realize that the message of the movie wasn’t
trying to make anyone feel a certain way, begin buying only local and organic
foods or to become a vegetarian. It was just simply trying to tell the truth
and shed light on what is really happening with our food and the farms and
companies we buy from. I had an idea and wasn’t completely clueless of where
our food comes from and how it’s produced, but the movie was very enlightening.
I didn’t realize how controlling corporations were over farmers, and I
definitely wasn’t aware of just how disgusting most of the farming conditions
were.
The story of the mother who lost her young son, Kevin, to an E-Coli breakout was very upsetting. You hear about the rare outbreaks and are surprised that this is still happening with today’s technology, but after listening to her story it makes it a little more real. To actually see a little bit of behind the scenes of the factories and a look at the rules and regulations is almost unbelievable. I was shocked to hear that FDA food inspections have dropped drastically from 50,000 in 1972 to 9,200 in 2006.
I don’t know even know what to eat now! As a college
student, I live on a tight budget. When I go to the grocery, I usually opt for
quick and easy frozen dinners. I know better than to think these are healthy
for me, but they’re cheap. After
seeing this movie I will probably think twice about what I’m eating; however,
at this point, I feel like I don’t even know what to eat or how to go about
acquiring these products if I’m concerned about how exactly my food is made.
Pretty scary.
