Let's talk about the feminist perspective, Dr. Pepper

This past weekend, I was sitting in the comfort of my own apartment, enjoying television when I was instantly alerted that the material in front of me would make an excellent blog post. In case you haven't seen it, three words (and a number): Dr. Pepper 10 commercial.

Well, well, well; can we say feminist perspective? Apparently, not only do all women hate action movies and only flock to romantic comedies, but we also aren't allowed to drink Dr. Pepper 10. The slogan for this new Dr. Pepper, with only "10 manly calories," is: "It's not for Women." Wow. I can say one thing, I would by no means consider myself a feminist, and honestly, this commercial doesn't as much anger me as shock me.. What the hell were they thinking?? I really have no clue even what type of man this would appeal to! I guess an easy answer to this advertisement is that it presents men as the "manly" and "rugged" type even though they are drinking a "girly" diet soda. Still, my boyfriend saw the commercial and before I even had a chance to open my mouth, he said: "They're going to be in big trouble for this." Honestly, if men need that big of a push to buy the diet Dr. Pepper, maybe the wimpy husband ideology really is true. When we ask ourselves the basic feminist question, "What does ideology say is common sense about gender?" the apparent answer is: Women can't drink Dr. Pepper 10.
