Desperate Housewives Phenomenon:
The very concepts of love and marriage are often ideas attached to major motion pictures, television shows, and even lyrics to songs on the radio. In recent time though, it seems that the very concepts of love and marriage have been the topic of hit shows such as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills on the Bravo Channel or Desperate Housewives on ABC. In many ways, these iconic shows depict married housewives looking for love and a change in the status quo amongst their daily lives. Funny, and filled with flare while many of these shows can be comical in nature but in scratching past the surface, these shows represent an area in popular culture that has indeed become a recent phenomenon within society as of today. Essentially these types of shows provide a glimpse into the ways in which men and women engage in married life, and often showcase the impact in which money can have over many different relationships alike. More specifically though, if we examine these types of shows through the feminist perspective that is outlined in the text of chapter one of our book, we can too begin to see different roles that women and men can take on within the 21rst century. Many moons ago it was not uncommon for women to be devoted housewives, and men to be the traditional breadwinners, but today it seems that women are now very much established in the workforce outside of the home. With that being said it is still important to realize that there are women who take pride in being a housewife, and shows like the Real Housewives of……depict women being content at home in their extravagant millionaire homes. In either case, there is no denying that regardless of whether or not you’re a housewife, shows depicting women contending with their married lives are without question areas in popular culture that have become of interest to many individuals alike.
